She was made, not born. In the Fourth Branch of the Mabinogi, the magicians Math and Gwydion conjure a wife for Lleu Llaw Gyffes out of the flowers of oak, broom and meadowsweet, a woman with no mother and no father, assembled from a hedgerow in bloom. They name her Blodeuwedd, flower-faced.

She does not stay as they made her. She falls in love elsewhere, plots against the husband she was built for, and Gwydion punishes her by turning her into an owl - a bird the other birds will not tolerate, condemned to hunt alone after dark. The name stays with her, barely altered. Blodeuwedd: flower-face, owl-face.

This design holds her at the moment of the turn. One half is still the woman, wreathed in oak leaves, acorns, tulips and meadowsweet, hair running into stems. The other half is already the barn owl, the heart-shaped face closing over hers, a waning moon at her shoulder. Neither one thing nor the other — which was always the problem with her.
